The Wide World of Wine Storage

At home, you have several options for wine storage.  Wine racks of various size and wine cabinets or cellars are the traditional choice.  Wine refrigerators are a more modern solution.  Each has its own plusses and minuses, and is suited for different situations.  You'll be able to decide  which wine storage solution is right for you by considering all the options.

Wine Racks

This simple method of wine storage comes in several different sizes, from the small, tabletop rack for two to six bottles to a larger piece of furniture.  However, in general, wine racks are suited to smaller collections.  They're inexpensive and easy to use, but won't hold a lot of wine.  Also, there's no option for climate control.  Heat and humidity are important to wine storage.  The area where you keep you wine should be around sixty percent humidity and about fifty-five degrees.  A stable temperature is most important.  The only way to control these factors when using a wine rack is to keep the rack in a room where the conditions are good.

Wine Cabinets

Larger than wine racks in general, and capable of offering a little bit of control over the conditions in which the wine is kept, wine cabinets are the next step up.  While enclosing your wine doesn't adjust the conditions much, it will help keep more humidity around the corks, preventing them from drying out.  A wine cabinet is usually a lot larger than a simple wine rack, but accordingly more expensive.  It's less than buying a comparatively size wine refrigerator or setting up a cellar, however.  That makes it a good choice for the beginning wine collector whose number of bottles is growing.

Wine Cellars

A cellar is the traditional place to keep wine for a number of reasons.  This part of the house is cool, generally damp, and it keeps sunlight away from the wine.  Cellars are also usually large, and have the space to spare for a wine collection.  Not everyone has a cellar in their house these days, however, so converting a portion of your home to a wine cellar is only for those who already have homes with basements.  If you are lucky enough to have a basement with the right conditions, it's just a matter of installing racks that will keep the wine in the right position.  Great for people with large collections of wine, a wine cellar can range from being simple and inexpensive to build to very costly, depending on how it's set up.  It can also be difficult, if your cellar isn't optimal for wine storage.

Wine Refrigerators

Wine refrigerators are relatively new on the wine storage scene.  They offer easy, precise control over the climate that your wine is in, and come in a variety of sizes, from counter top to cabinet.  Wine refrigerators are also generally fairly attractive.  The downside is that they're expensive, too.  A high quality wine refrigerator will cost you a lot more than a rack or cabinet of a similar size.  For many people, however, the cost is worth the benefit of being able to keep their collection in good condition.
